Engineering at Leicester

Engineering is one of the largest departments in the University of Leicester. The department is internationally renowned for quality research and excellent teaching, and has links with many of the world's major engineering companies.

At Leicester, all our undergraduate degrees are accredited by the Professional Engineering Institutions. In addition to a General Engineering degree, we offer a range of specialist degrees in which students have considerable interaction with students on other engineering degrees. Our first year is common to all engineering degrees. This ensures that our students receive the depth and the breadth of knowledge, skills and understanding demanded of a professional engineer. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching.

We cover many aspects of Engineering: Aerospace, Communications, Control Systems, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, and Software. The Department is the "right size" – it is small enough for members of staff to get to know individual students and large enough for us to offer a wide range of subjects and all the facilities you expect. You can normally change your degree specialisation at any point during the first year.

'With Industry' Courses

MEng and BEng ‘with Industry’ degree courses are also available. These sandwich courses give you the opportunity of a placement with a sponsoring company for one year between the second and third years of academic study. You will undertake a programme of training and practical experience that is agreed between the sponsoring company and the University.

A member of staff will be individually assigned to you as your industrial placement tutor. Industrial placement tutors maintain regular contact and will visit the sponsoring company during your placement. Upon successful completion of the industrial year you will be issued with a 'Certificate of Industrial Studies'. This opportunity can give you first-hand experience of working in an engineering-related career, enhances your employability skills and allows you to network with people in industry.

Study in a Different Country

There is also an excellent opportunity to add value to your higher educational experience by spending a year at one of our partner institutions abroad (e.g. Australia and the USA). During this period, you will have a personal tutor abroad and a tutor within the Department at Leicester to look after you and answer queries. You are expected to maintain a good academic performance whilst at the partner institution and will take their examinations. You will need to obtain a good average in your first and second year examinations in order to be eligible to spend a year abroad.
